Burj Dubai
Also known as:Tower of Dubai
No. 1, Burj Dubai Boulevard, Dubai, Dubai, Al Wasl Al Wasl United Arab EmiratesPrint this page   •   Share this page

When completed, this building is intended to be the tallest in the world. Originally, it was in the running with the Freedom Tower in New York, however, the Burj Dubai has the advantage of actually having begun construction while the New York project has been bogged down in political and sentimental interests.

Just how tall the tower will be remains to be seen. With any skyscraper, there is a certain amount of "fudge room" where the actual height of the construction may not be exactly what was anticipated. With a project as massive as this, more flexibility is called for in the design, planning, and execution. At this time, the tower is expected to be 2,683 feet tall (818 meters). However, those numbers have changed in the past and are likely to change again. There are estimates that it could go as high as 3,116 feet (950 meters) when all is said and done. It is also unclear how many stories will be in this tower. Early estimates were around 200, but those have been lowered to 189 as construction progresses.

Dubai is no stranger to monumental skyscrapers, but this one sets a new standard. Aesthetically, the Burj Dubai is a brilliant shard of glass piercing the Arabian sky. It is formed by three main shafts arranged in a Y shape. Their setbacks taper in a spiral pattern until the Burj Dubai is merely a spire in the sky. In any city, this would be a monumental structure. On the flat plain of Dubai, it is a shock to behold, likely to be visible for miles and miles. One can only imagine the views possible from those living and working inside.

But this tower does not stand on its own. It is part of a planned 500-acre complex of offices, hotels, shops, lagoons, and public space that will be a technological, economic, and social oasis all on its own.

  • 45,000 cubic meters of concrete was used in the foundation.
  • The hotel in the Burj Dubai is going to be an Armani-branded hotel. In keeping with Islamic custom it will have separate hours for women and men at the pool.

Quotations
  • "The tower design created by celebrity architect Adrian Smith for Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill is inspired from the geometrics of the desert flower and the patterning systems employed in Islamic architecture. It combines these historical and cultural influences with cutting-edge technology to achieve a high performance building which will set the new standard for development in the Middle East and become the model for the future of the city of Dubai."

-Robert Booth, Executive Director, Emaar Properties

  • "The tower goes up in steps in a spiralling way. In Islamic architecture, this symbolises ascending towards the heavens."

-Architect Adrien Smith, Turkish Weekly, August 10, 2005

looks great, hope all goes as planned, as it is a first of is kind.I hope labour workers are justly rewarded, not just the handful that get million out of this. I have see with my own eye in Dubai lot of labours are working very hard and not getting just wages (or min wage).

Its magnificant towering point simply speaks for itself. Even though my country has the biggest observation wheel in the world now, it can never match with the beauty of architecture: The Burj; will be a much impressive inspiration for all to admire at.

This building is truly an icon of the future. Already 4 times taller than the tallest building in my home state. (Arizona - Chase Tower, Phoenix)And still its rising..incredible

Sean - Monday, April 28th, 2008 @ 8:12pm

.....and i was impressed when the Q1 in surfers paradise, Australia went up, and that had some sort of record to it (something about the tallest residential tower or something) But this is just amazing... Cheers to everyone working on it :-)

Aysha - Saturday, April 26th, 2008 @ 7:02am

This is a fantastic piece of engineering and will be totally luxurious. Let them build what they want, I have been there and I can think of no other people so hospitable and caring. They could be stuck up like some other rich countries.

Andy - Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 @ 3:17pm

Beautiful building but a more lasting legacy would be for Dubai to put their energy into bulding a lasting peace between Israel and the other nations of the Middle East. Now THAT is risk taking.

Dwight Widaman - Monday, April 21st, 2008 @ 10:30am

this is the most amazing structure that i have ever seen and it is not even completed, i am looking forward to the completion of the Burj Dubai, so that i can at least see it on the internet. i will not be able to afford to see it, other than this way but i can always dream that i would be dancing in the Armani ballroom and looking over all the architectural achievements of Dubia from the observation deck. i was "blown away" so to speak by how it is designed to have the airflow go up the building in a spiral, i would assume even adding to the strength of the structure as opposed to creating force against it. pure genius. to all of you who are involved in this monumental project, my sincere congratulations.

cheryl carter - Saturday, April 19th, 2008 @ 1:07am

i am not in favour of the design of this building.. they design that building like a human skeleton .because i am civil engineer and according to my point of view i dont like that building..

sangemarjan bangash - Friday, April 18th, 2008 @ 11:17am

Its really a symbol of mankind activities on earth. But let UAE think of revolutionings their desert into lush green enviroment.

Bana - Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 @ 11:53am

Brian Costanzo - Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 @ 9:03pm

I have just been to Dubai the whole place looks like a big construction site i just hope it improves when its all finished. They could have sorted the roads out first.

Marcos - Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 @ 11:31am

I love this pictures, but why not build higher buildings in other countries that are very poor. I love Dubia

Bina - Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 @ 5:15pm

Absoulutely beautiful. This will be an honor to this country once completed.

Nyzo - Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 @ 9:39pm

How about taking all that money and build something actually visionary, like a desert sustainable building rather than just an insecurity trophy. Dubai looks completely ridiculous and unsustainable, much like our extravagant desert cities, Las Vegas and Phoenix. This is a real monument to folly and the loss of foresight and reason. Its aall vanity. Enjoy it! It will look great when the city becomes a ghost town in 70 years.

tyler - Monday, February 18th, 2008 @ 12:00pm

Dunai is my favorite city in the world, ervry time i go there I always bring back better pictures

Jannik Brandt - Friday, February 15th, 2008 @ 1:56pm

its top of the rating.. majestic.. sensational.. marvelous creation to those hands at work. Best in time, and let it rises for ever. Thats dubai, nothin has an end there.and guys, i dont feel any blames or hurtins on nobody for making any harsh conditions to the workers; mostly my fellow country men. Every wonder man makes has pain sweat and blood in it. And they make sure these workers know about it before they hop into that plane from home.

Joe - Wednesday, February 13th, 2008 @ 10:37pm

We Need Two More Eyes And May God Give us 100 More Years to See and Experience the Beauties of DUBAI.

Babu Rao - Monday, February 4th, 2008 @ 9:26am

this looks amazing but whith out any attention to histiry and heritage and culture!why?

ilana - Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 @ 1:15am

The structure is amazing. But as many people have stated, the price the South-eastern workers have had to pay really taints the inner-beauty (if any) that the structure holds. I only hope that by the time Dubai begins raking in tourism funds that they will give it back to the citizens by funding better healthcare, schools, and benefits for retirees.

Clay - Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 @ 6:23pm

nice building, just amazing what we human can achieve, extremely modern city but no character no feeling its almost artificial when I look at it, maybe good for tourism but I couldnt live there

Roberto Clemente - Monday, January 21st, 2008 @ 1:48pm

It is not only highest buildin in the world but also a good architectural model for the forther generations

SYED REHMAN SHAREEF - Thursday, January 17th, 2008 @ 12:02pm

nice building, disgusting city! the state of this city is a monstrosity! if they think they are going to get more tourists i think the city needs a seriosu clean up first!

Jake - Thursday, January 17th, 2008 @ 5:37am

I think it is a beutiful building, but i have been to dubai and it is horrible (full of polution) People only care about money not about the poor or the environment.

fivaz - Monday, January 7th, 2008 @ 11:12am

This structure is a symbol of the ingenuity of American architecture and the hard work of the South Asian( Indian, Pakistani)laborers that toil to build it. I praise those that are REALLY responsible for building this beautiful building.

Ravi - Friday, December 21st, 2007 @ 2:58pm

My dream came true today. Im a proud owner of an apartment in this building today. Could not have asked more from Allah.

wish - Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 @ 2:15pm

While i can appreciate the beauty and feat of engineering this structure, the more i see of dubai, i see a fake facade of fancy buildings but a city with no real beauty. What happens when the money dries up and age takes it toll on this city, will it really stand the test? At the end of the day do we need 1km high buildings to marvel at when there are people starving, and dying from disease just from lack of water. I think helping something like that would me a more remarkable feat.

Josh - Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 @ 10:57am

It is interesting how history repeats itself. Burj Dubai is symbolic for the tower of Babel. I just hope this time there will no shuffling of languanges. :)

Miggs - Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 @ 9:33pm

WoW..... The sleek slim design and simple linesappears to be a rocketship on a launching pad. Bellow the launching pad are billions of barrels of oil ready to fuel it to lunch to be the tallest man made structure. Architects, Engineers, and Planners invisioned the conceptsbut the masson, electricians carpenters and plumbers will make their dreams come true. Congrats!!!!

I also admire the architecture, working here, watching it grow.I wish that there will be a commemorative plaque on display, in honour of the workers who lost their lives during construction. This would be a symbol of thankfulness and add to the dignity of the building.

great skyscraper. it will be the tallest skyscraper in our present history. hoping to be completed soon and i am eagerly see this building in actual completion.

bernie pacho - Monday, April 9th, 2007 @ 6:28am

I viewed a television broadcast in Canada about the tower and its construction/engineering workforce. It gets so hot in the daytime the workers have to take the mid day (noon) hours off, but then will resume work even all night as the concrete will only set properly during the cooler night hours. They continually moved the workers lunch room to higher and floors so the workers dont have to go all the way down its many floors! Just incredible worker management and building engineering. Really enjoyed viewing the Dubai hospitality to the workers!

Doug Pruden - Saturday, April 7th, 2007 @ 2:11pm

I would love to see the view from the dizzying top floor height. Building will probably sway 1.5m at the top on a windy day. Horizon will be amazing 110km away from the top!! What a watchtower! Looks like an Absolutely Awesome Structure which pushes the envelope of possibilities just that little bit further. Very Elegant Futuristic design.

Yusuf Ahmadzai - Saturday, April 7th, 2007 @ 1:18pm

Fantastic project and will bring more economy in UAE, great vision.

Karl Roth - Monday, March 12th, 2007 @ 7:33pm

Brian - Wednesday, February 28th, 2007 @ 7:36pm

Kermit - Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 @ 10:32am

Iam an interior designer..iam looking forward to seeing it too nearly the biggest tower in all world

Sally - Sunday, February 18th, 2007 @ 8:19am

extraordinary architectural feat, I have been following the construction since day one now it has risen to level 106 so far, but as I watch it rise I notice it is very narrow, (I hope that the engineers and architects have it figured out), but I was wondering that the base of this building is supporting a HUGE amount of deadload weight(concrete and prime materials)it is reinforce concrete and at some point concrete will crack due to pressure., at certain height the building will begin with a steel skeleton frame, wait for the live load(people, furniture ,etc. will give it a enormous amount of extra weight I just hope this marvelous Skyscraper does not sink into the sand and remains structurally sound. This building is a marvel, a dream come true! But let us trust the design and ingenuity of American architects SOM, God willing this will be another Historic sucess of man in the 21st century.

Wilbert NYC - Sunday, January 28th, 2007 @ 9:16am

it will be superb.as much as we saw it was very impressive. hope it gets completed without problems.

mano pant - Thursday, January 25th, 2007 @ 8:54am

I love this building for its outrageous, audacious scale, its ultra-modern sleekness, and its gorgeous graduated spire. This is a structure that inspires wonder, awe, and delight. Kudos to the builders -- not just the designers, but to all those Pakistani, Indian and Filipino laborers working for $6 a day -- their work will inspire generations.

Patrick - Thursday, November 16th, 2006 @ 12:55am

Greg J LaPres - Sunday, August 13th, 2006 @ 11:05pm

I think this building is GREAT. Its height is really amazing, and its design is beautiful. The people of Dubai should be very happy and excited about this monumental skyscraper, and so should the whole world. This is and iternational monument, and shows how wonderfull life is.

Chen RongChang - Friday, August 11th, 2006 @ 2:41am

all people praize the tower, but where are the risks? will the artificial underground stand the pressure of this unknown new structure size?what do the iranians think about an arabian building of this size? Has it to be cut down by their missiles?

Gummi - Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 @ 7:52pm

I have seen many time this site realy its beyond me.It will be a wonderfull bldg. in the wold after its completion. It will play a vital role in dubai,s progress. It looks very impressive.

loki - Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006 @ 8:17am

This is the extream power of the designer and the government to allow them to built this fantastic building, which must be born anway...

Saman Maleknia - Monday, July 31st, 2006 @ 2:52pm

  1. it is simply grows.2. it is a big shame that the construction of that building is possible due to the enormouse prices we pay for oil.

Its just wonderful to see it, as Iam an architect so I can very well understand the its beauty. its a marvell

Ibrahim - Tuesday, July 18th, 2006 @ 8:17am

This building is a technological and engineering marvel. I have to had it to the UAE, when they go for it, they really go for it. Whether this building remains the worlds tallest or not...it will definitely be one of the most beautiful!!!!

It looks like a rocketship, and it will dominate the city that is already the greatest in the world... go Dubai!!

Nick - Sunday, June 18th, 2006 @ 6:48pm

this building is extraordinary it is still nice to know that the world trust a***AMERICAN*** design firm (SOM,Chicago skyscraper experts) no more to say ... and to our british friend the reason its more difficult to build this type of super skyscraper in the USA or England or many other countries is the cost of labor and materials is aprox. 50%to 60% higher, its a big investment to any country

Wilbert NYC - Sunday, May 28th, 2006 @ 4:25am

Absolutely stunning. What I love about the guys in Dubai is that they are not scared to spend the cash and actually build the things they dream about. Dubai is really setting the pace for construction. Best of luck to them.

WHD - Sunday, April 16th, 2006 @ 7:38pm

Really love the setbacks. I have heard so many different heights for the building. From 705 meter to 914 meters.

David - Tuesday, April 11th, 2006 @ 7:35pm

This will likely become the new definition of the skyscraper in this era.

Joshua - Monday, April 10th, 2006 @ 12:22pm

Larry - Tuesday, March 28th, 2006 @ 7:44am

This is an accomplishment beyond much anything anyone has done before. I hope that this great tower will reign in a new era of super-structures. I honestly cannot wait untill development on buildings such as this start to become a reality here in the states. I completely admire the design, and the fact that some have finally decided that the world is ready for a structure as incredible as this. I shall await the final completed tower as i check for updates on the construction every day.

Hans - Friday, March 17th, 2006 @ 11:30pm

Simply Amazing, I will also miss the CN Tower being the Tallest Structure in thew World. I guess well have to put up to it. Oh Canada is also losing the Worlds Biggest Mall to Dubai too, Oh Well.

Trevor Young - Friday, March 3rd, 2006 @ 3:19pm

i have seen the sight of the tower its truely amazing specially a shopping centre which is equal to 50 football stadium its truely amazing we best of luck to EMAAR properties. They are going to get alot of profit after its inaguration. LOL

Hamza Afdhal - Tuesday, February 28th, 2006 @ 5:00am

What makes Burj Dubai exquisite is that the final height is kept a secret so no building can take the lead. Architecturally it is unique and more than fantastic.

Joseph - Friday, February 17th, 2006 @ 6:26am

i love how the setbacks go in a cool order and the exterior of the tower is cool.ihope the tower goes like 1.000 meters and have atleast 250 flooors.

aj - Wednesday, February 8th, 2006 @ 10:54pm

This is going to be a truly amazing and beautiful skyscraper. I wish the U.S. would start building more skyscrapers to compete with ones such as this.

Brian Yates - Tuesday, February 7th, 2006 @ 1:14am

This is definitely a sleek and beautiful building with a very discernable soul. I believe most people would aspire to work and live in such a high place. This will be a testament to prove that architect firms such as Veronique & Associates were wrong about their critiques of this project!!

Jean Cretien - Friday, February 3rd, 2006 @ 9:09pm

I am a student of architecture from india and i consider this as masterpiece for architecture and all the credit goes to architect ADRIAN SMITH and his team of architects, consultants, engineers to bring up such a beautiful structure. all the best!!!

Muzakkir Bijli - Wednesday, February 1st, 2006 @ 11:24am

Although it is sleek and beautiful, it will be a building without soul. People were not meant to work or live in such high places for too long.

Veronique - Saturday, January 21st, 2006 @ 3:12pm

I live in Dubai and I see the beast growing up day after day.

Altin - Thursday, January 5th, 2006 @ 7:44am

Congratulations on an elegant, sleek, and benchmark skyscraper for the 21st Century. The future I imagined as a child is being unveiled.

in short span dubai has become prime destination not only in terms of infra structure but also retail and residential projects. being an architect i feel dubai as an encyclopedia which consists of all major construction venture and now Burj Dubai is going to add a huge jewel to the skyline of dubai. hat s off SOM and DUBAI

Kimberly Frasier - Saturday, November 5th, 2005 @ 10:51pm

It looks very impressive!! Once it is completed, I will miss Toronto-Canada having the record of largest freestanding structure in the world (CN Tower, but this looks like a worthy successor. I hope their are golf courses within 500-acre surrounding complex too!

Alireza - Friday, November 4th, 2005 @ 4:01am

It is very impressive! And looks bit as science fiction building but the concept is great! I wish to have one like this in Poland and of course visit last story (level) to see our World. My congratulation to all of you whom participated in this concept!

amina - Friday, October 28th, 2005 @ 12:34pm

Its amazing whats happening in Dubai right now, and as for The Burj Dubai, nothing can compete with it as it will tear the arabian sky into two. In less than 10years Dubai is going to be the capital of the world!!!

Shrung J V - Thursday, October 27th, 2005 @ 5:44pm
